I MYTHed That One! Page 21
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MYTH: Darwin advocated the opinion and belief that man was descendant
of the ape and that there was indeed a missing link.

FACT: Darwin advocated no such thing. What Charles Darwin actually said
was: "Man is the co-descendant with other mammals of a common
progenitor." At no time in his discussion of the evolution of man
does he state that man is the descendant of the ape. Nor does he
ever suggest there is a missing link. To the contrary, Darwin says
man's development took many, many centuries and his evolution could
easily be traced if one had the time and ability to do so.

MYTH: Moles in the yard are a hazard to the grass and plants in the yard.
They eat them and destroy the vegetation.

FACT: Moles do not eat grass or plants. In fact the mole is no more a
hazard to a yard than rain is. What danger he does present is no
more than aesthetics. In truth, the tunnels the mole makes can
actually be a help to the aeration of the yard.

HOW TO RAISE MONEY FOR A SMALL BUSINESS

Successful small business expansions & new formations lead the way in
creating new markets, innovations & jobs that fuel economic growth &
prosperity. In recognition of the importance of small business to a strong
economy, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) is pleased to help
meet the information needs of existing business owners & aspiring entre-
preneurs. We hope "Focus On The Facts" meets your needs & we invite your
comments & questions. Your success in business depends on what you know &
how well you can apply what you have learned.

RAISING MONEY

One key to successful business start-up & expansion is your ability to
obtain & secure appropriate financing. Raising capital is the most basic
of all business activities. But as many entrepreneurs who are just begin-
ning quickly discover, raising capital may not be easy. It can be a
complex & frustrating process. But if you are informed, well prepared &
have planned effectively, raising money for your business will not be a
painstaking experience.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
How To Start A Small Business (SBA Documentation) Page 23
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This information summary focuses on the ways a small business can raise
money & describes how to prepare a loan proposal.

WHERE TO FIND THE MONEY YOU NEED

There are several sources to consider when looking for funding. It is
important that you explore all of your options before making a decision.

o Personal Savings: Most new businesses are started with the primary
source of capital coming from personal savings & other forms of
personal equity.
o Friends & Relatives: Many entrepreneurs look to private sources such
as friends & family when starting out in a business venture. Often-
times, money is loaned at no interest, or with low interest, which can
be beneficial when getting started.
o Venture Capital Firms: These firms provide start-up & other needed
money for new companies in exchange for equity or part ownership.
o Banks & Credit Unions: the most common source of funding, banks &
credit unions will provide a loan if you can show that your business
is sound.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
How To Start A Small Business (SBA Documentation) Page 24
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
BORROWING MONEY

It is often said that small business people have a difficult time
borrowing money. This is not necessarily true. Banks are in the business
to make money, & the way they make money is by lending money. However,
it is the inexperience of small business owners in financial matters,
that prompts many small business loan requests to be turned down. To be
successful in obtaining a loan, you must be prepared & organized. You
must know exactly how much money you need, why you need it & how you
can pay it back. You must be able to convince your lender that you are a
good credit risk. Requesting a loan when you are not properly prepared
makes a statement to your lender. That statement is. . ."High Risk!"

BUILDING EXCELLENCE IN ENTERPRISE

Types Of Business Loans
Short-Term Loans: Loans that are paid back in less than one year. Types
of short-term loans include:

o Working Capital Loan o Accounts Receivable Loan
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
How To Start A Small Business (SBA Documentation) Page 25
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
o Line of Credit (Revolving Credit Line) Long-Term Loans: Loans with
maturities greater than one year but usually less than seven years.

These loans are used for major business expansions, purchases of real
property, acquisitions & in some instances start-up costs. Types of
long-term loans include:

o Personal Loan
o Commercial Mortgage
o Term Loan

HOW TO WRITE A LOAN PROPOSAL

Approval of your loan request depends on how well you present yourself,
your business & your financial needs to a lender. Remember lenders want
to make loans, but they want to make good loans, loans they know will be
repaid. The best way to improve your chances of obtaining a loan is to
prepare a written loan proposal.

A good loan proposal will contain the following key elements:
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
How To Start A Small Business (SBA Documentation) Page 26
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
General Information
o Business name, name of principals social security number of each
principal & business address.
o Purpose of the loan - State exactly what the loan will be used for &
why it is needed.
o Amount required - Request the exact amount you need to achieve your
purpose.

Business Description
o History & nature of business - Give details of your business's age,
number of employees & current business assets.
o Ownership structure - Provide details on your company's legal structure.

Management Profile
o Management description - Develop a short statement on each principal
staff member in your business; provide background, education,
experience, skills & accomplishments.

Market Information * (See Section At End Of This Article...)
o Clearly define your products & market.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
How To Start A Small Business (SBA Documentation) Page 27
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
o Identify your competition & explain how your business competes in the
marketplace.
o Profile your customers & explain how your business can satisfy their
needs.

Financial Information
o Financial statements - Provide balance sheets & income statements for
the past three years. If you are just starting out, provide a projected
balance sheet & income statement.
o Personal financial statement - Prepare a personal financial statement
on yourself & other principal owners of the business.
o Collateral - List all collateral you would be willing to pledge to the
bank as security for the loan.

HOW YOUR LOAN REQUEST WILL BE REVIEWED

A loan officer's primary concern when reviewing a loan request is whether
or not the loan will be repaid.
To help answer this question, many loan officers will order a copy of
your business credit report from a business credit reporting agency.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
How To Start A Small Business (SBA Documentation) Page 28
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Therefore, it is helpful if you work with these agencies to help them
prepare an accurate picture of your business. Using the credit report,
& the information you have provided, the lending officer will consider
the following issues:

o Have you invested savings or personal equity in your business totaling
at least 25% - 50% of the loan you are requesting? Remember a lender
or investor will not finance 100% of your business.
o Do you have a sound record of credit worthiness as indicated by your
credit report, work history & letters of recommendations? This is
very important.
o Do you have sufficient experience & training to operate a successful
business?
o Have you prepared a loan proposal & business plan which demonstrates
your understanding of the business & your commitment to the success
of the business?
o Does the business have sufficient "cash flow" to make the monthly
payments on the loan request?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The SBA offers a variety of financing options for small businesses.
However, it rarely makes a direct loan to an individual or company. The
Agency is primarily a guarantor - it guarantees loans made by banks &
other private lenders to small business clients.

SBA guaranteed loans generally do not exceed $500,000, of which the
Agency guarantees 85 or 90 percent of the loan balance to the bank. The
average size of an SBA guaranteed loan is $175,000 & the average
maturity about eight years. SBA guaranteed loans are obtained through
private lenders.

* UNDERSTANDING YOUR MARKET

Your business will not succeed just because you want it to succeed.
Determining if there is a market for your products or services is the
most critical item of planning. Once you decide on your product or
service, you must analyze your market -- a process involving interviewing
competitors, suppliers & new customers.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
How To Start A Small Business (SBA Documentation) Page 31
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
However, before you begin researching your market, you should take a
brief, but close, look at your product or service from an objective
standpoint. In terms of a checklist, you should ask yourself the following
questions:
- Is this product or service in constant demand?
- How many competitors provide the same service or product?
- Can I create a demand for my product or service?
- Can I effectively compete in price, quality & delivery?
- Can I price my product or service to give me the projected profit?

Once you are satisfied that these questions are answered, move on to
performing your research.
Market research is extremely beneficial; the information gathered can
increase your profit potential.

Market Research

- Shows alternative approaches to your market.
- Provides a more accurate base for making profit assumptions. - Aids in
the organization of marketing plans.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
How To Start A Small Business (SBA Documentation) Page 32
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Assists in the development of critical short/mid-term goals. - Breaks
down your market's profit boundaries.

Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs fail to complete this critical section
of their business plan. Collecting research data can be frustrating
unless you have defined your goals & organized the collection &
analysis process. To prevent this from happening, you must plan how you
will collect, sort & analyze the information. Maintain a notebook &
file in which to store, organize & retrieve data as needed.

Questions To Ask
Your research should ask these questions:
- Who are your customers?
- Where are they located?
- What are their needs & resources?
- Is your service or product essential in their day-to-day activity? -
Can the customer afford your service or product?
- Where can you create a demand for your service or product?
- What areas within your market are declining or growing?
- What is the general economy of your service or product area?
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
How To Start A Small Business (SBA Documentation) Page 33
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Market Data

Knowing your market not only requires an understanding of your product,
but also an understanding of your customers' socio- economic conditions.
This information will serve as a map in letting you know what is ahead.

More market information can be found in:

- Library listings of trade associations & journals.

- Regional planning organizations' studies on growth trends.

- Banks, realtors & insurance companies.

- Competitors.

- Customer surveys in your market area.

- U.S. Government publications.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
How To Start A Small Business (SBA Documentation) Page 34
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once you have obtained & analyzed this information, it will become the
foundation of your business plan. Research data is important because it
supports the basic assumptions in your financial projection --your reason
for going into business.

Summary

To be successful, a small business owner must know the market. Market
research is simply an orderly, objective way of learning about people --
the people who will buy from you.

Consult your telephone directory under U.S. Government for your local SBA
office or call the Small Business Answer Desk at 1-800- 8-ASK-SBA for
information on any of the above resources. In Washington D.C. call
205-7333.

Also, you may request a free copy of The Small Business Directory of
business development publications & products from your local SBA office
or the Answer Desk. All SBA programs are available to the public on a
nondiscriminatory basis.

Commentary Corner! Page 39
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I watched, recently, a television talk show about racism. The big question
asked was: "Is racism worse or less with the next generation?" I'm not
certain what their opinions ended up being. I heard many people, black and
white both call each other names with racial slurs. I heard the name of
'honky' and 'nigger' used by both. But this brought to mind one question
I have. That question is this: What difference does it make? I mean, in
the long run, what difference does it make if someone is black, white or
yellow? Truth is, there is only one superior being (from my religious
prospective anyway) and that is God. Sporting an attitude about one race
or another is wasted energy. This advances no one. It helps no one. It
convinces no one. Separation of individuals reduces us all. It places
limitations on everyone in a world. The energy spent by some people hating
someone else, whether it be because that other person is black, white,
oriental, homosexual, Jewish, or what have you, is energy that could be
better spent in trying to advance the human race as a whole.
Perhaps I'm naive. I don't know. But what is the point? Hating anyone
does more harm to the individual who holds the hate than it does the person
they hate. Like a spreading cancer that hatred spreads through their being
effecting everything they do and think. Lowering the positive force of
the human race, giving it an unhealthy injection of negative energy. This
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Commentary Corner! Page 40
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
very action harms everyone.
Hey, dislike of someone you know is one thing. Being prejudice of someone
you know is another. These two actions can be justified simply because of
the knowing of that individual. But to apply that same prejudice and dis-
like to a whole race is not only wrong but stupid.
There is no one superior here! Hey, you will all die! You will all face
certain things in life. Age, illness, taxes, etc.
I don't understand how or why someone could hate another person simply be-
cause of their color. I understand hating someone because of their actions
or crime, but because of their color, this is stupid.
Perhaps part of the problem is the over-use of the term "racist." Many
people will call others racist when in fact it has nothing to do with race.
When this happens it demoralizes and belittles the actual acts of racism.
In a great many of the cases it is not racism but power struggles. A shift
in power from one person to another.
But regardless of what is really happening, hating someone because of their
color of skin, religious beliefs, or political position is cultivation of
stupidity; advancing none, furthering no cause, and negating those positive
actions of the human race as a whole. Stop the anger and hatred. One sec-
ond after you are dead it will be 'I don't care' anyway.

Tomorrow Author Unknown Page 50
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I Believe In Tomorrow

I believe in it because it has not yet come. And I am young, and youth
always believes that tomorrow will be better than today. I believe that I
will do tomorrow what I failed to do today, and be then what I have not
yet been.
I trust the future. Youth is always glorious because it trusts the future.
Youth will attempt the impossible, scale the mountain that is supposed to
be inaccessible, and dare the thing that age will fear. We specialize in
the wholly impossible, doing the thing that no one else could do.
I believe in Tomorrow because it is unspoiled. I have not, nor has anyone,
yet written on it with the grimy finger of folly or selfishness or sin.
No wars have been fought in Tomorrow. No lie has been told, or dishonest
deed done, in Tomorrow. No man has treacherously failed a friend in
Tomorrow.
Tomorrow is one clean, beautiful day, the day on which dreams come true, on
which the impossible things will yet be done, on which I shall have the
nerve and the will be and to do that which was too much for me in the grim
battle of Today.
I Believe In Tomorrow!

At seven o'clock I was downstairs waiting with the rest of the tourist
group to board the bus. We left Salzburg at exactly seven thirty. We
drove across a small section of Germany, back across the border to
Austria, then skirting the border of Germany drove on to Innsbruck. At
Innsbruck we spent one night and one day.

Innsbruck is a city that is over 700 years old. To the north are the
steep, sheer sides of the mighty Alps, to the south the mountains of
the Tuxer range forming a series of drop curtains for the city. It is
an old world town of about 120,000 and the original baroque style of
the city from 1239 remains virtually intact.

We checked into the Goldener Adler, Herzog-Friedrichstr, 6, founded in
1390. This hotel is in the heart of the old town of Innsbruck. Yes
there is an old town of Innsbruck. As if a vail had been lowered the
old and the new city of Innsbruck are separated. On one side of the
city sits the old Innsbruck whose clock stopped somewhere back about
the fifteenth century and on the other side sits the high rise
buildings so common to the skyline of an American city. Goldener Adler
had a history of being haunted. It was after all the place where Dukes

and Princes stayed in days of yore. They frequently stayed with their
mistresses. The stories are told that there was an occasional murder
committed by their jealous wives. Thus the stories of the Hotel being
haunted was born. It is also said, if one has some psychic ability, he
can see the ghost of a Prince walk down the hall to the room his
mistress once waited. The legend says upon arrival to this room, the
Prince, once inside, found, not his mistress but, his wife with sword
in hand. She took his life without batting an eye. He, it is said,
repeats this same activity night after night, and will continue to do
so until he finds his mistress. Whom by the way was also killed by his
wife.

Our tour group spent the next day doing the common tourist bit. We
watched the procession of Corpus Christi, the most colorful religious
procession with brass band and folklore programs Innsbruck has to
offer. We also had a lovely dinner at Seefeld and enjoined in the
gaming at the tables. Then returned to Goldener Adler at about
midnight. Just in time, as Mrs. Moore said, to see the ghost of the
prince. No one of the group reported seeing the prince, by the way.

.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 53
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
No one saw the ghost of the prince, but I saw something. I entered my
room, turning on the light with the switch by the door, and saw a
figure standing by the window, across the room from me. I must have
closed the door, though I do not remember doing so, and stood
transfixed starring at this figure. I could not determine who this
figure was, but my perception was I knew this figure. I heard nothing,
but knew something was being said to me. I could not determine what
was said but was certain it was another warning. Perhaps this was not
the case, and I merely suggested this thought because of the previous
warnings in my dreams. The figure did not move, it stayed for only a
few moments. I could not calculate the actual time it remained before
me, but it seemed like only a minute or less.

I still insisted I would not accept these events as fact. I dismissed
them with the concept that they were incidents brought on by my dreams
and the atmosphere.

I was tired, but not exhausted, yet not tired enough to sleep. I read,
even played solitaire for a while, then decided I had better get some
sleep. I did, secretly, dread the thought of sleeping because of my
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 54
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
dreams. I did not wish to be visited again in my sleep or otherwise.

My wish must have been understood or at least respected. Because I
slept without incident through the entire night. When I woke I was
quite refreshed and ready for the trip to proceed to Basel,
Switzerland. It was at Basel we were to follow the highway north
through the Black Forest. We drove all day, stopping only a few times
and for lunch.

We arrived very late in the night to Basel and fortunately our rooms
where ready and waiting for us.

We stayed at the Solitude Hotel, a beautiful hotel with its own
grounds. Centralized in the heart of the city, yet having the solitude
the name suggests.

Basel, the gateway to the Switzerland Rhineland. Is a region lying
along the river Basel and the Rhine. There are six bridges that span
the Rhine as it turns north through Basel and divides the city into two
portions. The one called Greater Basel is the commercial and cultural
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

area, the other called Little Basel is the industry section of the
city. Basel is known in the world as a center of international banking
and insurance. Its industry is related to chemicals, pharmaceutical
and electrical equipment. It is the home of the Swiss Industries Fair,
held annually, the nation's most important trade event.

Co-mingled in the modern city are elements of tradition and
medievalism. One example of the medievalism, or Gothic style
architecture, is the cathedral, or Munster. The Munster overlooks the
Rhine. It is not uncommon, from its terrace, to see a gigantic barge
coming down the Rhine from the north, perhaps from Baden-Baden or
Rotterdam. The cathedral, built of dark red sandstone, was all but
destroyed by an earthquake in the fourteenth century. Inside is the
tomb of Queen Anne, wife of Rudolph of Habsburg. Habsburg was the
family name of the rulers or conquers of this area centuries ago. Also
entombed there is Erasmus of Rotterdam. In front of the cathedral is
Munsterplatz, a square known throughout Europe for its exquisite
perfection of its proportions. From here, a short walk down
Augustinergasse takes me to the Natural History Museum. This museum is
extremely interesting for the viewing of prehistoric relics from the

third century lake dwellers.

After another day of site seeing, and a short, but impressive, tour of
the city I returned to the hotel to have dinner with the rest of the
tour group. The members of the tour group are mostly Americans. There
are four who are British, and then, there is a couple, I believe are
Italian. They do speak English but not fluently. Mrs. Moore, the
widow from Columbus, Ohio, is the unofficial tour guide. She has more
information, trivia type information that is, than anyone I have ever
seen. She is the type of individual, bless her soul, that is dear, but
a babbler. She takes her first breath in the morning and from this
point on never takes another breath for the rest of the day. Or to put
it another way, she talks between breathes. She seems never to run out
air and talks incessantly. Tonight, for some unknown reason, she is
strangely quiet. She talks, but only briefly, then falls to silence
again. If this behavior did not strike me as extremely odd for her it
would be considered a welcomed relief. The couple which seems to being
doing most of the talking at this moment is Mr. and Mrs. Bentley.
They, Mr. Bentley says trying to imitate an American accent, 'Hail from
Cambridge'. The fact that Mr. Bentley is indeed, Dr. Bentley and a

full professor at the University does not alter his attempt to
Americanize himself so he can fit in with the majority. He did admit
to Mr. Prescott and I during one conversation that his favorite
television show is 'Dallas'. Thus he has a habit of trying to imitate
American's with a Texas accent. He is speaking of his former
experiences in the Black Forest. During a period when its beauty was
not so appreciated but its darkness yielded good coverage from the
enemy. For his experience was during World War II. A time which Dr.
Bentley has not forgotten, but a time that is surely overshadowed by
the peacefulness of the countryside we now sit. He continues on to
inform us that the Black Forest or Schwarzwald, is not called the Black
Forest because it is some sort of sinister place. No not at all, it is
called this because of the dark evergreens. The Forest, Dr. Bentley
states, runs north and south from Basel, to as far north as Karlsruke.
Along the highways, of which there are three main ones, that dissect
the Forest, there are numerous resort communities, noted for the spas
and healthful resorts. The Forest separates France, Germany and
Switzerland with the Rhine flowing along the eastern side of the
Forest, west of France. It is quiet and remote and its valleys cut in
the evergreen populated mountains. Dr. Bentley said we should all take
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

note, in the morning when we leave, look to the south over the smooth
tops of the Black Forest mountains which gives way to the magnificence
of the Alps. 'No prettier site has one ever seen. Not in war or in
peace.'

I decided to call it a day and I said my goodnight's. As I walking out
of the dining hall, Mrs. Moore grabbed my arm and asked if I would
mind her walking with me back to the rooms. I suggested it would be my
pleasure to walk with her. We walked through the lobby, both in
silence, yet she held firmly onto my arm as if afraid she might fall or
something. This is puzzling to me, this lady is a traveler, never
before on this trip had she shown signs of fear or concern regarding
anything. As we approached the elevator she turned to me and said,
"Carol, I may call you Carol?"

"Of course you may."

"Carol, I am very concerned about this trip tomorrow. I have had an
uneasy feeling since this morning. When I woke, I began reading some
of the more interesting facts about the Black Forest, and every since
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

then I have felt peculiar about making this trip."

"Peculiar? How?" I questioned, thinking this merely an idiosyncratic
thought on her part.

"Like..." her words trailed off into oblivion. After a long silence,
she continued. "I don't really know how to explain what I am feeling.
It is sort of, well, the way I felt just before my husband died."

To this I did not know how to respond. I knew I had to choose my words
carefully in hopes to put this lady at ease. But what to say exactly.
It was obvious from the look of abject fear on Mrs. Moore's face that
she was deadly serious about her feelings. And it was obvious from the
lack of circulation in my arm, which she still held tightly, her fear
was genuine. I tried to speak softly and with confidence, though I
myself had experienced my dream visitations from Sister Anna Katherine.
I attempted to reassure Mrs. Moore there truly was nothing she need
worry. As we stepped off the elevator, her grip on my arm loosened a
little. I went on to say perhaps the events of the day where brought
on by some activity which subconsciously reminded her of her husband.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dimensions In The Dark by J. L. Black Page 60
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps as a result, he was more in her thinking than she realized.
Because of this, the underlying thought or feeling continued to come
forth, but showing itself in another manner.

She seemed to accept this, or at least she let go of my arm, and I took
that to mean acceptance. I walked her down the hall to her room, asked
if she would be alright. When she said yes, she thought she would, I
said good evening and went to my room.

I refused to give time in my thinking regarding Mrs. Moore's feelings.
She is a lovely, kind lady, but none the less, she is still easily
influenced by suggestions of others. This became evident when Mrs.
Jacobs, a strong willed lady from our tour group, suggested illness as
a result of the bus and the swaying felt in it when driving over the
mountain roads. The only person to suffer motion sickness was Mrs.
Moore. I felt certain what she was experiencing today was merely a
suggestion made by someone else. Perhaps the simplicity of Dr.
Bentley stating the name, The Black Forest, was in fact not sinister at
all. Perhaps Mrs. Moore felt it indeed was sinister and let her
imagination run with this thought. Or perhaps Mrs. Moore had listened
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

to Dr. Bentley tell his WW II stories all day. Mr. Braden said Dr.
Bentley had told several stories all through the day, starting with
breakfast.

The Forest is truly a rich fertile land. Farming is done in this area
as well as silver and gold mining. The Black Forest of Germany spans
on the eastern side of the Rhine River to Freiburg. Along the low
lands by the Rhine are the vineyards of the famous Rhine wines.

Along the Rhine, in the Black Forest, also looms some the most
impressive castles and cathedrals of yesteryear. The atmosphere of the
area lends itself to the world of myth and romantic legend. Numerous
stories or legends are told of the forest. Some of which are of sea
monsters in the Rhine to little elf type people who make the best wine
on our planet, but no mortal has ever tasted this wine.

I had, by now, changed into my night clothes and was resting quietly on
the bed. I decided to read, for the atmosphere was conducive to
reading. My choices of reading material was a German Bible laying on
the nightstand next to the bed, though my German is not bad it is also

not that good. My other choices were the mystery book I had brought
with me or the text book on computer graphics or more tourist
information on the Black Forest. Pondering the events of the evening
with Mrs. Moore I choose to read the text book. Analytical as it may
be, it forces one to maintain a good grasp of reality as well as
maintaining a high level of concentration for comprehension sake.
Besides, it is what I teach.

My reality, having fallen to sleep, slipped into the reality of the
dream state. Again, as before, my dreams were invaded by the sight of
Sister Anna. I, in my sleep, decided to ask what it was she wanted.
The only response I seemed to receive was to turn back, go home from
here, do not travel further into the Schwarzwald. Why, I remember
asking, why? What could possibly occur on this trip that might cause a
problem? An accident, or what? No accident, was the response I felt.
If no accident is in sight then what? And with this, Sister Anna
merely faded from my vision.

The Krausmeyer raised a jeweled chalice toward the grotesque image
hanging amid stagnate plumes of smoke. The Prince, through the idol
glorifying his disfigurement, smiled down on the little man. And for that
transcendent moment, the two locked in a gaze that would not yield to the
murmurings of the Servants.

"Send only Thy thought down upon us, oh Prince, that Thy Servants' gift
my find acceptance in Thy sight!"

Trembling, the Krausmeyer brought the chalice to his lips, felt bile rise
in his throat as the heady scent of perfumed blood rose through his nose
into his brain. But he would have to drink. The sacrifice demanded it.
The little man held his gaze - defiantly - and poured the rich contents
of the golden goblet onto his tongue, let it roll nauseatingly around the
cringing flesh of his mouth.

"Oh, Prince, we lay ourselves before You as servants of Thy will! And
unto Your presence we offer this UnAnnointed in hope that we find favor
in Thy sight! Accept this offering, reveal Thy will! That Thy faithful
may find their way through Thy darkness into the light of Thy fire!"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Krausmeyer sucked the disgusting fluid down his throat; he swallowed,
through force of will, great gobs of the mucous fluid, choking on each
wave as it left long tears on his esophagus. Mercifully, when he could
consume no more, the vessel was empty and he could throw it to the floor.

The hollow "thwak, thwak, thwak!" of the precious metal bouncing stayed
in his ears longer than the benediction of the Seven Servants of the
Prince.

"May Thy Servants find favor in Thy sight, Prince of Old, and may this
Disciple prove worthy to open Thy door to a New Age, an Age that holds
the coming of Thy power and the Anointing of Thy Servants in the blood of
Thy redemption!"

Hymie heard their footsteps as the Servants rushed to his side; felt
their hands as he fell into their embrace. The stifling stench of incense
gagged him. But his last thought burned with the image of the Prince,
peering down on him, through a dark, twisted smile; his eyes glowing
blue, purple, red, then piercing his mind with a painful stab of blinding
white.

As the Seven beautiful Servants raised him from the dias, Hymie slipped
into unconsciousness; in his encroaching dreams, he was all powerful.

in your aura! Let me dance on the fragrance of your breath!

"...Brother!...Brother Hymie!... service of the Prince!..."

...no...no... Don't take me away!... So nice, so free! No pain! No...

As he began to sense, to feel his body surrounding him, Hymie remembered
its restrictions, its limitations, its imperfections. And as he
remembered them, he put each infirmity in its place, gave each limitation
its control over its former area. Until he was no longer free, no longer
tall, no longer powerful. His spirit funnelled into his five foot two
inch misshappened frame and quickly halted at the foreshortened extent of
its deformities.

The little man's mood sank into near depression as once again he
remembered that he couldn't talk.

"The limitations of the body are merely illusions of the mind," Sister
Sarina said softly.

Hymie rolled his eyes toward the voice and found his new friend seated on
his right, smiling sympathetically. How kind she was, to wait with him,
to care for his well being, to instruct him these last two weeks.

"You've come far in those 2 weeks," Sister said. "And you will go farther.
No self-imposed limitation will hinder the expression of your spirit."
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning Of An Age - Disciple of the Prince Page 67
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hymie smiled sadly, glimpsing the swiftly fleeting images of power,
strength and freedom that had only moments ago been his dream. With those
wonderful sensations receding he wondered again how the woman could know
his thoughts.

"Thought waves are a form of energy," Sister Sarina said. "And all energy
is nothing more than varying frequencies of light. I open my mind to the
pulse, the beat of those waves and the same words that they form in your
mind appear in mine." Sarina shrugged. "I can tune to other frequencies if
you feel I'm intruding. But I thought it was easier this way."

Hymie smiled at the sensitivity of the gentle woman and the respect that
she showed toward even one as wanting as he.

What am I supposed to do now? he thought.

"You're to experience the full potential of the spirit. Building slowly,
one success at a time. Would you like to begin?"

But what is the goal? Hymie wondered.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning Of An Age - Disciple of the Prince Page 68
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The goal? Ultimately the goal is to bring enlightenment to the world."
Me? Enlighten the world? And Sister Sarina could feel the Krausmeyer
questioning his ruined body. "The greatest gifts are given to those who
must face the greatest obstacles. Come, my friend. The Servants have sent
you through the First Ordeal. Shall we see what you have learned?"

Looking into the warm regard of his friend, Hymie could not refuse. He
rolled his aching body over the side of the cot and caught his weight on
the sore pads of his swollen feet.

"Try that leg," Sister suggested. "Extend it past your frozen knee."

Hymie doubtfully extended the leg, expecting at any moment to feel the
catch and the pain of a long-ago knife wound. He stretched to the point
of his usual limitation, felt nothing, and continued on.

"It's a freeing of the light," Sister explained. "The First Ordeal
concentrates on the purification of the body. By attuning your personal
vibrations to frequencies of the universe, you rid the so called physical
of its self-imposed limitations. Try the other leg."
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning Of An Age - Disciple of the Prince Page 69
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hymie extended both legs until he had them parallel to the floor, a feat
he couldn't remember doing. Instinctively he started rotating shoulders -
no crunching bones! - & extending his arms. No pain! His limbs felt heavy
& slightly drugged, but he realized these as lingering effects of the
'Ordeal.' The pulling muscles & torn tendons he had lived with since the
forgotten time of his abandonment as a child were no longer with him.

"The body is nothing but an exercise," Sister said. "Perfection of the
body is merely a step toward perfection of the mind. Which in turn is a
step toward the perfection of the spirit. Would you like to try an
exercise of the mind? To experience the direction of your training?"

Hymie, still studying the relative freedom of his body, nodded without
much consideration of the question. Perfection of the body? Perfection of
the mind? If these painless limbs were what Sister meant by perfection,
he wanted more. Sarina giggled for the joy her little friend was feeling.

She said, "All physical manifestations are forms of energy - frequencies
of light. Therefore, to control frequency is to control the manifestation.
Do you understand?"
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning Of An Age - Disciple of the Prince Page 70
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hymie didn't & looked up at her - playfully - from under his lowered eye-
brows. Sarina laughed. "Don't worry about the explanation. Try this.
Imagine the walls of this room as beams of light - they're very small
beams & they're moving very quickly! But they are light. Imagine it."

Hymie stood quietly and found himself dropping into a kind of trance. He
suspected Sarina was pushing him mentally along into this feeling.

"Don't fight the energy! Understanding is trying to enter your body.
Relax and let the energy flow!"

Hymie stopped resisting. Soon he felt vibrations around his face; shortly
after, his upper torso was vibrating also.

"Good!" Sarina told him. "Now let your energy see the wall! If you can,
BECOME the wall! You are in complete control of this experience!"

Hymie felt himself floating, like tiny particles not really together, but
agreeing to travel in some sort of formation. Sarina's voice faded into
the din of motion.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning Of An Age - Disciple of the Prince Page 71
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"...come the wall..."

In Hymie's mind, he had become a column of light, pulsating points of
energy racing in never ending streams. Although he couldn't recognize his
surroundings, he knew he wanted to enter another column to energy and he
moved toward it.

"...uhm uh all..."

Sarina's voice, lost in the overpowering wash of energy. Hymie floated
toward the light, drawn to it by his desire to mingle, become one with
this new light.

He neared the light, entered the light, & by agreement became the light.

And the joyous feeling of size entered his awareness. He could feel his
form extending in many directions, bending, shaping, forming something
new to his experience. He would have laughed if he could have located the
energy which formed sound. But all this was too new, too unexpected for
that much control.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning Of An Age - Disciple of the Prince Page 72
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
He felt a vibration deep inside himself; something foreign and not yet in
agreement with his energy. A friendly vibration, a strong vibration. But
not of himself.

This vibration moved inside of him, like a fetus in the womb; and he
wondered if somehow he would experience the release of this energy. He
wondered if it would separate from him, if it would...

Then he knew!
He had become the wall!

And the energy he was feeling belong to Sarina! He, in his experience of
the wall, had surround her energy and could feel it vibrating inside!

He felt the power of his ability to contain; he felt the expression of
energy which saw itself as a wall! Almost as though he could hold his
friend like a cage would! He could shelter her; he could protect her.
Could he detain her? Possibly so. If his energy were greater than hers!

Hymie found the thought oddly fascinating.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Team Eeeek: The Dawning Of An Age - Disciple of the Prince Page 73
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
At that moment another energy chose to enter into the cavity created by
his. This second energy was less friendly, less warm and, he decided,
less welcome.

Hymie wanted to understand what this new energy belonged to & tried to
slide inside himself until he was close enough to identify it.

As he willed his energy into motion, he found himself sliding - then
falling - into increasing velocity. He thought he must be racing around
inside himself and wanted to stop. But the power of the fall was too
great for his inexperience.

He rushed headlong about his energy field until the dizziness of the
sense of speed overcame him and he lost all control.

As if it sensed his dilemma, a force of energy much stronger than his own
loomed up in front of his fall. In the ensuing collision, Hymie found
himself collapsing into himself; it was as though he had called all of
his former energy into its former agreement. It rushed back into
formation and Hymie found himself in a heap on the floor of the room.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
And over him stood Sarina and one of the Seven Servants.

Sarina eyed him unfavorably, then spoke to her companion. "Certainly you
can see that he has the native potential. I say that he should be
elected!"

The other sister sighed as though reluctant to concede. "Yes, I suppose
he should," she said.

Should what? Hymie wondered. I should be elected what?

Sarina turned toward the little man and answered his unspoken question.

"The Disciple of the Prince," she said.

To be continued.

The house is over 150 years old. Up until recently it was quiet. The
only inhabitants were the living. But suddenly things began jumping in
this house and the actions were not by a living person. It began when an
auctioneer was getting the furnishings in the house ready for sale before
the present owners moved into the place. While working she and her helper
heard a door close in the house. They searched the entire house, but
found nothing. They decided not to take a chance and called the police.
The police laughed, an odd reaction, but still laughed then checked out
the entire house. He found nothing.
The police officer explained the reason he laughed was because the house
had already gained somewhat of a reputation for being haunted. Though most
in the police force felt this was nothing more than a joke. The police
officer went on to tell them that many of the police officers in the area
have reported seeing lights in the house at night. Though upon investiga-
tion, they found nothing.
He told the auctioneer that he had never been so afraid as he was one night
when he entered this empty house. He just had a feeling of dome. He turn-
ed off the light that was burning and left the house quickly. Within an
hour the report came across his radio once again that the light was back
on in the house. He drove by, but didn't go in this time.
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Strrrrrrrange BITS! Page 76
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
But the evening that convinced the police not to enter the house took place
during the winter. A fresh snow covered the ground. The auctioneer, who
was staying right next door at her parents home, noticed the lights in the
house were glowing. She went outside and looked around the area. There
were no foot prints in the fresh snow. She went back inside and called
the police. The police came out and checked the area. They too took
notice of the lack of footsteps in the fresh snow. For this reason they
opted not to enter the house. The lights burned on well into the night.
The next morning when the police returned to investigate, the lights were
now off. The snow was still virgin. The police searched through the
entire house, they found nothing.
By this time most of the police were very acquainted with the house. One
police officer had become very accustomed to the activities in it. But
when he was investigating another reported break-in he was surprised when
he was greeted with a new noise. At first he could not figure out what
this noise was. But after checking through the entire house, one thing
he discovered was two electric clocks. Neither one of these clocks had
ever worked but now, both clocks were running. The hum of the those two
clocks was the sound he had been greeted with.
The new owners finally moved in. The events in the house continued but the
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Strrrrrrrange BITS! Page 77
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
new owners didn't let this sway them from living there. At least, not at
first. They moved out soon after they had a party. During the party, a
small group of people gathered together in the kitchen to talk. When one
person in the group said, "Hey, is this place really haunted?" With that,
a bunch of pots and pans began rattling. Then a cupboard door began swing-
ing open then closed then open again, repeatedly.
That was enough, the people moved out. But soon after the next new owners
moved in and have remained.
The history of the house is that it was built sometime in the 1830s. It
was once a farmhouse but the city had now moved in around it. It was built
by the Philbrick family. The last Philbrick to live in the house was Eva
who died in the early 1950s. The house was then purchased by a Boston
business man who moved in with his mother. He lived there until with her
until she died in the early 1970s. Then he lived there alone until his
death in 1987.
Some believe the ghost is that of Eva Philbrick and others believe it is
the spirit of the last owner.
The house is still haunted. No formal investigation has ever taken place.
The house is located on Route 107 47 Depot Road Kingston, New Hampshire.
It is privately owned, please do not disturb the owners.

Because it has enacted a broad-ranging Endangered Species Act, the United
States often is touted as the model for legislating preservation of
biological diversity. But other countries that seek to emulate this
American formula The Endangered Species Act will not, as advertised,
prevent the destruction of the biological diversity of our Nation. The
President and his Administration do not have the courage to implement a
law that constantly highlights their domestic economic and environmental
failures.

The reasons for the continuing controversy of the latest "Spotted
Owl/Ancient forests" vs Logging jobs controversy can be found in a new
report by the General Accounting Office (GAO) on the Implementation of
the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The GAO report was requested by the
Subcommittee on Environment, which I chair, and the Committee on Science,
Space, and Technology, chaired by Rep. George E. Brown, Jr.

Their findings show that some 650 domestic plant and animal species have
been listed and protected as endangered or threatened under the

Endangered Species Act since 1973. Another 600 other species probably
meet the scientific eligibility criteria for listing but have not been so
designated. Their listing is held up in paperwork so thick that it will
not be completed until as late as the year 2006. In the interim, 200 new
requests for listing are coming in each year and the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service suggests an additional 3,000 candidate species soon may
be threatened or endangered.

Once species are listed their fate doesn't improve dramatically. The GAO
found that the development of recovery plans for these species is slow.
A third of the species on the list (almost 200) still do not have approved
recovery plans. For 65% of the listed species, the process took more than
3 years from the date of listing. At this rate, even if they are listed,
many species will be lost while agencies devote their attention to other
programs instead of to the preparation of recovery plans.

These delays result in the loss of valuable time. Species languish,

their numbers decline, their biological and genetic viability declines,
and the probability of extinction increases. The Gulf of California
harbor porpoise was listed as endangered in 1985, although none had been
sighted since 1980. Subsequent sightings confirm that the species still
lives, but its population may be as low as 100. Measures to save popula-
tions when they reach such low numbers often become heroic & economically
expensive. Our opportunities to save them without significant economic
disruption also decrease. We need to increase the amount of resources
allocated to process this backlog of candidate species & act before
species become the 'living dead'.

However, these endangered & threatened species serve as indicators of far
more serious problems - they warn us that our ecosystems are in trouble.
The GAO report found that most endangered species have been concentrated
in two areas of the country - the far west and southeast. The far west
region includes Hawaii, the national jewel of biological diversity. 3/4
of the species waiting to be listed are from their regions.

At issue in the spotted owl dispute is not merely the continued existence
of an endangered species but that of its habitat - the old growth forest
ecosystem. The owl-versus- logging dichotomy is far too simplistic to
convey the reality of the problem. This keystone species serves as an
indicator of the health and stability of this ecosystem.

Today's spotted owl controversy will evolve into yet another species
controversy next year. Will it be the year of the southeast's
red-cockaded woodpecker or the Louisiana black bear? We must move our
environmental policy forward from the emergency- room triage,
species-by-species approach to environmental problems. We need to become
pro-active and holistic in our policies and move towards an integrated
multi-species and ecosystem approach to land use and conservation. The
issue isn't endangered species per se but endangered ecosystems. Our
goal should become the management of ecosystems for the sustainable use
of biological resources and the conservation of biodiversity.

Each endangered species is not an isolated species but part of an
ecosystem. Eliminating one part of an ecosystem will have adverse
effects on the whole system - for the whole is indeed greater than the
sum of its parts. Our ecosystems depend upon the species connections
within them for their stability and resilience.

These connections require the protection of not only the "charismatic
mega-fauna" - the endangered California condor, Bald Eagle, or Gray wolf,
but the little species as well -- the invertebrates and the plants which
are the foundation of the web of life that all ecosystems depend upon.

How many undiscovered "taxols" exist in our ecosystems today? The Pacific
Yew had long been thought of as insignificant. Little was known of how
many even existed in the old-growth forests. It was burned as a weed
after logging an area. Yet, to the 10,000 women who die annually from
ovarian cancer, the yew is a highly significant inhabitant of our
forests.

The time has come to act before species become crisis situations. We
need to strengthen the ESA, but we also need to complement it with
national biodiversity legislation. We need to undertake a national
inventory of our biological resources and their status, and identify
species and ecological communities of outstanding value.
With this knowledge, we can begin to plan for the sustainable management
of our resources. We can take measures to protect "hot spots" containing
sensitive species or critical ecosystems. We can plan and act before
additional species become endangered. Do we need more than 3,000
candidate species to tell us there is a problem?
Last week, negotiations for an international treaty on the conservation
of biological diversity were completed and a treaty is now ready for

EXITING DOE SECRETARY URGES CONGRESS TO FULLY FUND SSC Page 85
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DC - Rep. Brown (D-CA) today released a Jan. 14 letter in which the
departing Secretary of Energy, Adm. James D. Watkins, proposes that the
US complete the $8.3-billion Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project
"independent of foreign contributions," & that the Congress this year
appropriate the remaining $5.5 billion needed to complete the program
(excerpts from the correspondence are attached). Arguing that the US
"should not be in a position of allowing another nation to determine the
schedule of this project," Watkins argues that the US be prepared to make
up shortfalls in foreign contributions. The correspondence states that
the Department of Energy "is confident that foreign commitments of $400
million of the $1.7 billion can be obtained by FY1999," but that without
significant involvement by Japan "it is highly doubtful that the
one-third foreign funding goal can be met." The current baseline funding
profile assumes that the USgovernment will provide approximately
two-thirds of the SSC's budget ($5.7 billion), &"nonfederal" sources
would provide the balance ($875 million from the State of Texas, & $1.725
billion from other nations). Including FY1993 spending, approximately $2
billion already has been spent on the program. The 25-page letter from
Watkins came in response to a Dec.15, 1992, letter from Rep. Brown
asking specific questions about the budgetary & programmatic impacts on

the SSC of last year's congressional funding cuts. The Watkins letter
provides detailed budget profiles & schedule information for a variety of
funding scenarios. Responding to the letter, Brown commented Watkins "has
correctly identified the Catch-22 of foreign funding for the SSC: Major
foreign participation has remained elusive because of uncertainty about
the US commitment to the project, yet our own commitment has wavered in
large part because of the absence of substantial foreign funding." Brown
also noted Watkins letter illustrates the failure of not having negotiated
foreign involvement in the SSC from the outset of the project. "Rather
than achieving an international consensus on the design & siting of the
SSC from the beginning, along with a formula for international funding,
the US made all of the early decisions unilaterally & has been trying to
internationalize it ever since. It's no wonder foreign funding has been so
difficult to nail down." "While I personally remain fully supportive of
the SSC - based on its vast potential to expand our understanding of the
fundamentals of matter, it is clear that this project's fate will be de-
termined by the new Administration. The budgetary & scientific issues re-
viewed in Admiral Watkins' letter make it clear the SSC will be among the
most important & difficult policy decisions facing the new Administration"
said Brown. Estimated cost of terminating the SSC is $278.1 million.

ADL Protests Former Nazi As Head Of World Medical Group Page 87
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
NY 1-22/US Newswire: In a strong protest to the German Medical Assn., the
ADL has urged withdrawal of support for Dr. Hans Joachim Severing, a
former Nazi, as president-elect of the World Medical Assn. Severing has
been accused of sending a 14-year-old girl suffering from tb to a
"killing center" in 1943. "Dr. Severing should not take office. He is
an embarrassment to all that is good in German medicine," Abraham H.
Foxman, national director of the ADL & Dr. Michael Franzblau, ADL
national commissioner & clinical professor of dermatology at the
University of California School of Medicine, San Francisco, wrote to the
professional Assn. "With the recent outbreak of violence against
foreigners, anti-Semitism & xenophobia in the Federal Republic, old
memories of the Nazi period come to mind," Foxman & Franzblau said. "The
German medical community must repudiate all vestiges of this black period
in the history of German medicine," the letter continued. Severing, a
leader in German medicine & one-time president of the German Medical
Assn., told The NY Times he joined the SS in 1933. He is now 76 years
old & practices in the town of Dachau, site of the Nazi concentration &
extermination camp. The AMA has also called upon Severing to step down,
& ADL commended the AMA for its quick action in advising the World
Medical Assn. it will oppose his presidency.

New Rider Profile Discloses 'Typical' Mass Transit Patron Page 88
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DC, 1-22/US Newswire: A new profile of the typical US transit rider has
emerged from a ridership analysis just published by the American Public
Transit Association. She is a minority female with below average income,
going to & from work. APTA Chairman Louis J. Gambaccini said the findings
illustrate the importance of public transit to the nation's economic
well-being. On an average weekday, the APTA survey found, 7.5 million
people board public transit. More than half (54%) of all transit "trips"
are made to & from work; school trips comprise another 15%. The remainder
are for shopping, medical visits & recreation. Other key findings
include:

- About 28% of all riders have annual family incomes of less than
$15,000, twice the national "poverty rate," as measured by the Census.
- Nonwhites make up a majority of riders. 31% are African-American. 18%
are Hispanic & 6% are "other."
- While 52% of riders nationally are female, the percentage frequently
ranges between 60-75% in small cities & rural areas;
- Children & youth make up 1 out of every 10 riders, senior citizens 7%
& people with disabilities about 1%.

Conference to Celebrate Racial, Ethnic & Religious Diversity Page 89
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
VA, 1-19/US Newswire: At a time when the world is increasingly torn by
racial, ethnic and religious strife, the Third U.S. Women-Church
Conference will challenge that trend at a major national conference which
celebrates women's racial, ethnic and religious diversity. From April 16
to 18, more than 2,200 women (and a few good men) will gather at the
Civic Center in Albuquerque, N.M., to explore the richness of women's
spiritual and social experiences and develop new strategies to challenge
injustices in both secular and religious institutions. This pioneering
conference has been initiated by Women-Church Convergence, a coalition of
more than 40 groups rooted in the Catholic tradition, which reached
beyond past boundaries to join with organizations and individuals from
other religious traditions to co-create this conference. Over 100
speakers, artists and presenters are slated to deal with four central
themes: spirituality, economics, violence/healing and education.
Albuquerque hospital chaplain Catherine Stewart-Roache summed up her
hopes for the conference this way: "It will be a time to gather women
from all over the country to the southwest to discover our spiritual
space and the spirituality in each other -- in forms as diverse as the
landscape." On the final day of the experience women will have their
choice of over 30 rituals and religious services to attend.

Statement of FBI Director William S. Sessions Page 90
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
DC, 1-19/US Newswire: Statement of FBI Director William S. Sessions:

The Department of Justice today released the report of the Office of
Professional Responsibility, a few hours after providing me with a copy,
and with no opportunity for me to respond to point out the numerous
errors in fact and mistaken conclusions it contains. This process has
been conducted without the barest elements of fairness, and marked by
press leaks calculated to defame me.

Without benefit of time to do a point-by-point analysis, however, I will
answer the report in broad detail.

First, the report says I did not pay taxes for use of a government
vehicle. The armor plated bureau car is provided for my security, and
the bureau security personnel insist that it be used. Mr. Barr has
agreed with OPR that I should pay taxes for office-to-home travel in the
armored vehicle. If it is true that the exemption was not warranted,
then I will of course pay the taxes.

Second, the report says there were trips in which I used the government

plane and tied official functions with social events. In accord with the
opinion of Bureau and Department of Justice personnel, whenever I travel
by plane in the United States, I must for security and communications
reasons travel on Bureau or Justice Department aircraft. Mr. Barr
himself wrote the opinion that so concluded. Whenever I travel by plane
I obtain an opinion from the Bureau's office of legal counsel about
whether the trip should be classified as business or personal. Further,
every trip is followed with submission of a travel voucher that is
reviewed independently by the bureau's administrative personnel. I have
always followed, and never tried to thwart the bureau's procedures for
air travel. I will continue to reimburse the government for personal
travel.

Third, the report says a fence installed at my house was a privacy fence
and not a security fence. The account given in the report, I am told, is
lavish with details that were never before brought to my attention. I
can say this: the purchase of the fence ultimately put at my house was
reviewed and approved through the appropriate FBI procedures. I have
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'

lived with security as a judge and as director of the bureau, and I know
a great deal about it, it is not possible to have perfect security; I am
of the opinion that the fence in place provides an appropriate degree of
security, evidently at considerably less cost than the one proposed by
others. I would not have had perfect security if I had assented to the
bunker-like and neighborhood-destroying changes that were proposed. I
accepted something less than fortress-like security, and I am prepared to
live with the consequences.

Fourth, there is the charge that I have not cooperated in the
investigation, this refers to my not signing an authorization to permit
an inspection of the mortgage documents containing personal information
relating to myself and my wife. This document was put before me during
the conduct of the OPR questioning. It went to a subject matter that was
entirely new, and it came as the press was reporting leaks from the
investigation. There seemed to be no end to the search into my privacy,
and in this instance it seemed totally unwarranted; certainly the reason
for it was not clear, my counsel were totally surprised by the request
`----------------------------------------------------------------------------'
.----------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Statement of FBI Director William S. Sessions Page 93
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

that I sign this document and this unheralded approach to the
investigation. They advised that I not sign the document, so I did not.

One more observation is in order. I am advised that the report accepts,
uncritically, the statements of a man whom I removed as head of my
security detail. One vital flaw in the OPR process is that I have not
been given the fundamental right to review or challenge his assertions.
For the OPR report to give his statements such facile acceptance is
incomprehensible, in light of what is known about his conduct.

As a lawyer, judge and government servant, I have lived a life of respect
for the law. I believe that I have conducted myself in accordance with
the law and with uncompromised ethical standards. I have done so as
director, and through this proceeding. I will continue to do so.
